The Social Reckoning is off to a quiet start. Aaron Sorkin's follow-up to his The Social Network screenplay earned about $2.1 million on Friday from 2,606 locations, and TheWrap projects an opening weekend of around $6 million. Variety put Friday at $2.15 million, and some outlets have estimated the weekend at closer to $7 million.
For comparison, The Social Network opened to $22.4 million in 2010, before adjusting for inflation. The new film is released by Sony and co-financed by Alcon, and TheWrap puts the net production spend at $30 million. Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg, Jeremy Allen White is among the cast, and Sorkin directs, his fourth film as a director.
Why It May Be Struggling
TheWrap argues that films built around current events and politics have had trouble reaching wide audiences lately, pointing to Digger and the 2022 drama She Said as other examples. It also notes that Sony can absorb the loss, helped by the success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The weekend figures are early estimates based on Friday, so the final number may move when Monday's actuals arrive.
