A short guide
How to choose a movie tonight
Start with the mood, not the title.
Decide what kind of evening you want before you scroll. A tense thriller and a comfort rewatch are different decisions, and choosing the feeling first makes the shortlist much smaller.
Be honest about the runtime.
A two-hour film and a three-hour epic are different commitments. If it is a weeknight, check the length first so you are not deciding at 11 p.m. whether to stop.
Read two kinds of scores.
Critics and audiences often disagree. Look at one critic-based score and one audience-based score, then skim a review or two to see why they differ. A divisive film can be exactly what you want.
Check where it is streaming before you commit.
Catalogs change by country and by month. Open the title page to see where it is available in your region, and whether it is included with a subscription or has to be rented.
Give it a fair test, then move on.
If a film has not hooked you after the first twenty minutes, it is fine to switch. Life is short, and the watchlist is long.

Movies by genre
Pick a genre to see what is popular right now. Each card includes a quick note on what to expect.
Action
Chases, fights and big set pieces. Pick action when you want momentum over plot, and check the runtime, because blockbusters often run long.
Adventure
Quests and journeys across far-off places. A safe choice for a group with mixed tastes, since adventure films tend to work across a wide age range.
Animation
Animated features run from family comedies to films aimed squarely at adults. Check the age rating before you assume it is for kids.
Comedy
The most subjective genre. Work out whether a film leans on slapstick, wit or awkward situations, and watch the trailer before group night.
Crime
Heists, investigations and the underworld. Expect moral gray areas and slow-burn plots that reward your full attention.
Documentary
True stories and real people, from nature films to investigations. A good way to learn something without committing to a whole series.
Drama
Character-driven stories that stay with you. Many awards-season titles live here, so skim a review if you are unsure of the tone.
Family
Films pitched at every age on the sofa. Scan the age rating and content notes if younger children are watching.
Fantasy
Magic, myth and invented worlds. Many are part of a larger series, so check whether a film is the first chapter or the third.
Horror
Scares, suspense and the supernatural, from slow dread to jump-scare thrills. Know your tolerance before you press play.
Mystery
Puzzles, clues and twists. These are best watched without spoilers, so stay out of the comment sections until the credits roll.
Romance
Love stories from sweet to sweeping. A romantic comedy and a period romance feel very different, so check the tone first.
Sci-Fi
Space, technology and the future, from action spectacle to cerebral what-if stories. Our timeline guides below unpack the puzzle-box ones.
Thriller
Tension that keeps you on the edge. Plot-driven and often twisty, they work best when you can watch in one sitting.
Or pick a mood
Feel-good
Warm, funny and uplifting picks that leave you in a better mood than you started.
Edge of your seat
High-tension stories that keep you leaning forward until the final scene.
Mind-bending
Puzzle-box plots, time loops and dream logic for people who like to think.
Date night
Romance, chemistry and crowd-pleasers that suit two people on a sofa.
Family night
Something everyone on the sofa can enjoy, from the youngest to the oldest.
Epic adventure
Sweeping quests, battles and big worlds that fill the screen.
Spooky
Scares, suspense and the supernatural for when the lights are low.

Ratings, explained
Every film page on Every Movie Plug can show several scores. They measure different things, so it helps to know what each one means.
TMDB user score
The average of ratings from registered TMDB members, out of 10. It reflects what everyday viewers think, and newer films can swing a lot until enough people have voted.
IMDb rating
A weighted average of votes from IMDb users on a scale of 1 to 10. It is useful for comparing films across decades because so many people have voted on the classics.
Rotten Tomatoes
The Tomatometer is the percentage of critic reviews that are positive, not an average grade. A film at 80% is liked by most critics, but that does not mean they all gave it 8 out of 10. The Audience Score is a separate number.
Metacritic
The Metascore converts critic reviews to a 0 to 100 scale and averages them with extra weight for some outlets. It is a better guide to how strongly critics liked a film than a simple fresh-or-rotten split.
CinemaScore
A grade from A+ to F based on polling of opening-weekend moviegoers. It captures first-night audience reaction, which is why a film can have mixed reviews but a strong grade, or the reverse. We covered one such gap in our report on Other Mommy and its D+ CinemaScore.
Where to watch
Streaming catalogs differ from country to country and change month to month, so the best place to check is the title itself. Open any film on this site to see where it is available in your region, whether it is included with a subscription or has to be rented or bought, and where to find the trailer, cast and scores. Streaming availability is provided by JustWatch, and listings come from TMDB. Availability can change without notice, so it is worth a second look right before you press play.

Questions
Frequently asked
How are the trending movies chosen?
The weekly list comes from TMDB's trending chart, which is based on activity on TMDB. It is a good snapshot of what people are looking up and rating right now, not a ranking of box office or streaming hours.
Can I watch movies on Every Movie Plug?
No. We do not host or stream films. Title pages show where a film is legally available, using streaming data from JustWatch, so you can find it on the service you already use.
Where do the ratings come from?
TMDB provides the user score and listings, and critic and audience scores from sources such as IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic appear on title pages when they are available.
How often is this page updated?
The trending list refreshes through the week. News is published as stories develop, and we update an existing story when there is a new development instead of repeating it.
How do I report a mistake or suggest a topic?
Email [email protected] or message us on X at @everymovieplug. We read everything and correct errors we confirm.
